I have a MBP that is showing age. I'm thinking of a buying a new (well, refurbished) one.

I was looking online to compare speeds but I couldn't find the answer. So, simply put, I'm looking at a 2012 or 2013 refurbished MBP that has a 2.3GHz Quad-core Intel i7. My current 2009 machine has a 3.06 GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo.

Which of these is faster?

In some cases the quad core Intel Core i7 will be many times faster than your Core 2 Duo due to the new instruction sets and more threads. Also keep in mind that the i7 completes more instructions per cycle.

thanks man. I didn't know how to search on google for this correctly. i hadnt thought of that phrase!

I always use geekbench for that kind of questions:
http://browser.primatelabs.com/mac-benchmarks

What I like in particular is that it has scores for single and multi-core. Now your old machine has:
1629 (single, 32 bit)
2863 (multi-core, 32 bit)

The 2.3 GHz rMBP reaches
3106
11807

so about twice as fast in single core and up to 4x as fast in multi-core tasks. It's not even close ;)

The 2.3GHz i7. It's faster by several orders of magnitude.

3.06GHz C2D T9900 vs 2.3GHz i7-4850HQ:
Single core: 1818 vs 3578
Multicore: 3280 vs 13825

Quad core any day my friend. It's got like 8 threads in it (2 per core) so basically you can do many tasks with no lag. Pretty sweet stuff! :D
