i was just curious as to which of my macs would be faster.

my pb is the DVI 1 GHZ g4 released in september, with 768 MB of DDR ram, a 512kb of l2 cache

my desktop mac, is a g4 450 dual processor, with 896 MB of PC 100 ram, i think 512kb of l2 cache, and 1mb for each processor in l3 cache.

what do you think? does the l3 cache really make that much difference?

The laptop

The G4 in the laptop has a 512K onchip L2, running at 1Ghz (1:1 ratio)

The laptop also uses PC2700 RAM, this offers 1.3Gb/s of bandwidth with the G4s FSB being stuck at 167Mhz

The G4s in the desktop have 1Mb of backside L2, running at 225Mhz (2:1 ratio)

The desktop only uses PC100 RAM, this offers 800Mb/s of bandwidth at best, shared with 2 cpus, the G4s in the desktop are almost starved of bandwidth in that configuration.

I'd say the laptop should beat the desktop at almost anything that isn't governed by the speed of the hard drive.
