What’s going on here; can I archive messages?

Ok 1) what’s going on with this reporting? Is this something to go with the indexing after a major update and the phone is still working on things?

2) is there a way to selectively backup then remove messages (say anything over a year old)? I don’t want to permanently delete everything but would like archive the older messages then free up that space.

You may want to look at iMazing (imazing.com), which provides a way to export Messages for archiving among many other very useful features.
