Whats great about Jailbreaking?

I been interested in buying an iPod Touch 4g and was thinking about Jailbreaking it to see how it works and what it can do, but I don't want to damage the device. I have no interest in taking risk without knowing the benefits. Can anyone tell me what makes Jailbreaking an iPod Touch so great, and your favorite things about it?

I am not ready to make the plunge....especially since 4.2 JB isn't "fully" out yet

And from what was explained to me, one of the bigest reasons to JB the touch or iPhone is to get pirated apps or apps that Apple has rejected and being able to install them on your device.
