Im in the graphics business and been using my 2009 mbp until now. A workhorse of a machine. Had several upgrades over the years ram, battery ssd drive but its time to retire it to family home use. Awaiting delivery of the top of the range 15" mbp next week. Hope I gat the same value from the new one. Whats longest gap others have left between upgrades

Now you should be able to have at least half of your days free cos of this much faster machine ;)

2009-2017: Late 2009 iMac 27-inch. First Mac ever. It was the one with the green pixel bug. It stopped working because the graphic card got f*cked up, so I sold it really cheap. I didn’t care to spend money on fixing it as I was over the iMac.

2010-2014: 2010 MacBook Pro 13-inch. It was fine, but I had to upgrade because the battery got destroyed and I would get electrostatic shock in my ears through my earbuds when connected to the MacBook.

2014-2018: late 2013 MacBook Pro 13-inch. It’s still a good laptop. No major issues. After my iMac gave up its been my main computer for the last 12 months and I’ve come to realize that the screen size isn’t enough for me. I want a larger screen so it can become a truly versatile computer that I can enjoy using.

2018: waiting on the 2018 MacBook Pro 15-inch to arrive between July 24-26th

As you can see I unintentionally happen to upgrade my laptops every 4 years without being aware of it.

I took a 2011 MBP in November 2011 and then in November 2016 bought the new Pro. I am happy with it, however, only reason I am looking to make an upgrade now is the True Tone and larger battery. The other niceties such as quad core, sound and quieter keyboard are bonuses.

Anyone in a similar boat with a 2016 MBP?

Hm, the battery being 10% larger and Apple still claiming the same 10h.
What makes you think it’s worth it spending that much money?

I agree, not much makes me think it is worth spending that much money.

If and only if these notebooks are overall 20-30% faster, then the niceties may be worth an upgrade for me, as I am a writer and would appreciate a great display and keyboard. I use Cherry Blue MX in the day and I am okay with the MBP keyboard in the night.

True Tone is appreciated on the iPhone 8, so I think I would like it on the new 2018, but $1200 is a steep price to stomach. That said, every time I have purchased any Apple product, from a cable to an iPhone to a Mac, the price has always been a little too much to stomach, although the experience has been stellar, so the price jolt is somewhat mellowed.

Also upgrading from a mid-2009 MBP. “Boosted” the RAM to 8GB right after getting it and added an SSD later, but the battery only gets 2-3hrs. It’s been stellar, but I’m ready to move up to something with more of everything (and doesn’t have an optical drive in it that I have to lug around). It’s running Sierra and I’ll still use it as a work computer. However, for personal use and Logic Pro X I’m looking forward to having my socks knocked off by the improvement.

Still on the fence between 13” or 15” though.

Truetone might be a thing. It just doesn’t make a huge difference for me.

But the CPU upgrade won’t help you compared to the 2016.

Maybe I’m wrong but i never heard that a writer needs CPU power. The MB should be sufficient for that.

Or do you render the book layout too?

2012 to 2018 for me, I ordered the latest MBP, though this throttling issue, has given me some pause. I know the story is just breaking and we need to see if others have the issue. I think I may be ok, since I ordered an i7 and I don't push my machines terribly hard.

I am not looking into the new MacBook for CPU power. I am only looking at True Tone and keyboard improvements as they may be material to me and everything else is bonus. Meh, I think I will sit this one out. :p
