I'm begining to think windows 98 is even though its way older then os9

Windows 98SE was a good OS in its time. Windows 98 first edition was poor. But yes it was better than OS9.

Well considering you could upgrade most Mac's that came with OS 9 to run at least Panther or Tiger decently then I would have to say the computer with OS 9. If you would just run one of those 2 then I would probably have to say 98 as I never really liked OS 9 and only became interested in Macs once OS X was released. I have a bunch of PowerMac G3's I got from work which came with OS 9 and they run Panther and Tiger very good once you upgrade the memory in them.

im someone who switched to mac a month ago but i would say win98. i know its less stable but it has more available programs and a better interface (since os 9 has no dock). anyway, win98 is no longer supported by Microsoft so you will get no tech support for those random errors!

Security should be the first thing considered and since both of these OS's are so old they are only good enough for web surfing and email and possibly typing a document so in this case Mac OS 9 is better.
The Dock is not the only thing that sold OS X. If that's the case you can put a fake Dock on Vista, would that make it even with Mac OS X? No.

That depends on what you use the pc for. if its not on the internet it cant get virus (except off cds or floppys). actually i would have to say that the dock is one of the reasons i switched; i had used rocketdock on xp and found it easier to use than the taskbar.

anyway, go for win98. DOS security flaws ftw! :D

wow im surprised so many people are saying windows 98! im gonna have to go with os 9, feels snappier and is more stable. im not even a fan of the classic mac os, but really? 98? id rather be waterboarded.

It really depends on what you want to do with the machine.

Machines of that age are probably easily obtained free anyway so why not go for both.

I Must admit I am currently putting together a win98se box to run some old windows games I have, well to be honest it is just waiting on the voodoo gfx card that is "somewhere" in my loft! and of that reasoning its just what is more nostalgic to you!

It may be worth mentioning I have lots of old macs in my loft too, I just want to play some old windows games! Maybe I'll se if I can find that old 68k mac running debian up there too, that might be fun also! (though in a different way)

of course win98se. The previous generation of OS war was settled long time ago, and OS Classic wasn't the winner.

I got one of those when I was really young and was scared that I was about to be arrested.

OMG, that is so true! I remember when my Win 95 and 98 PC's did that I thought the feds were gonna trace my computer and come looking for me.:D That's why MS sucks, scaring their customers just because their OS is incompetent.

What updated browsers work with os9 though? netscape works half-assed and thats the only somewhat up to date browser for it but very unstable..... Firefox 2.0 will run on windows 98 and so will 3.0 if you do some tweaking.....Latest flash still works on windows 98 but not os9

But those apps are not created by Apple. That's a different thing all together. Your comment was on the OS's and OS 9 is way better.

I switched back from Win3.1 to OS 7.5 back in the day and I still have 3 macs running at home all with 9.2 and they are much more stable than any Win98 PC i've used that's for sure.

It seems that some people here are talking about OS 9 like they have never owned and used it. Like calling it "classic" LOL.

Neither. If a machine won't run current versions of Mac OS X or Windows, I'd rather get Ubuntu and install that instead. the xubuntu distribution is very undemanding, and good for older systems.

I used, off and on, System 6 and 7, as well as OS 8 and 9 while in high school and college. I also used WIndows 98. I don't miss any of them. :)
