I'm working at a new place, and to give me vpn access (so I can work remotely sometimes) they need to know my Macbook Pro's 'name'. Is that the name of the Admin under My Account, in the Accounts panel of System Preferences?

I've never used Terminal. Would this be too change the name, or to find out what it is?

The command "hostname" simply gives you your computer's name. So whatever it presented you with is your computer's name.

It should look like:
Code:
computername:~ username$ hostname
computername.local

thank you. Should it be showing up in that box in the Sharing section of Preferences?

It should, but all that box in the Sharing pref pane is for is allowing the end-user to change their computer's name (hostname) without having to know UNIX commands.

Ah, okay, thanks. I know nothing, so better for me to stay out of the Terminal I think. Under that empty box in the Sharing panel it says:

Computers on your local network can access your computer at: <name>

Is that the name of my computer that the admin people want to get me vpn access?
