When you order an iPhone, we got a choice to make ir carrier specific or any. What’s the reason to use carrier specific nowadays?

in the past, there used to be different technologies for different carriers, not sure now.

I think it is mainly access to certain incentives I guess. I haven't looked this year, but via carrier you may get some kind of extra discount or better trade in values?

I always buy directly from apple unlocked, and without any carrier incentives so I'm not "locked" into a multi-year deal.
 
If you have a trade-in your trade value might be more through a carrier than Apple. That's the case with mine.
 
Your phone will also switch esims right away when you turn on new and will be already activated on your old line.
