With companies leaning towards Monthly pay-off plans, what is the best avenue to get iPhone?

My mother has an iPhone 5C, and is looking to upgrade. (really I'm going to give her my 6 and take her upgrade). Is the best way to Trade in her 5C with Apple and get $ for trading it in, and paying monthly through apple?

Advice?
