What's the best freeware notepad app?

I'm looking for a good lightweight (SL compatible) notepad app -- something I can type out quick thoughts. I'm looking for a regular app, not a widget. Suggestions?

How about the Notes function in OS X Mail? It syncs with an iPhone or Touch.

(Personally I use TextEdit--simple styling controls, and drag-and-drop images.)

VooDoo Pad is nice and I do use it, but I've the paid version and forgot that they offer the Lite version. xPad isn't bad though and it's free.

ScratchPad is great for its minimalism.

There's evernote if you want sync across the web.

There's also textwrangler if you need coding support.
