I'm looking for a player that plays .mkv and other files for free or very little cost from the app store.

MPlayerX gets my vote. Using it for nigh on 2 years now. It plays anything. I was a VLC user until it came along.

MplayerX has all the settings you need and has played all of my files fine. Has audio adjust as well.

VLC has always been amazing. I've been using it for upwards of 5 years. Very small program, no unneeded fancies. Can do many things with it to manipulate video and audio. Plays .mkv out of the box without any need for extra codecs. And I really appreciate their mission statement:

"The VideoLAN project is a project, lead and composed by a team of volunteers, that believes in the power of open source when dealing with multimedia."

Just keep in mind that AC3 is a very popular audio format for videos in the MKV container. And almost all of the current downloads of MKV players from the App store have had the AC3 decoder removed due to copyright troll interference. At least for iOS devices...not sure about OSX devices, as I always use VLC when viewing on my Mac, or just run Plex on my Mac and stream from that over to my Samsung TV (that also has a Plex client on it) and Roku devices.

Another vote for MPlayer OSX

Used VLC for a long time but wasn't a fan of the more recent updates where they've lost some of the simplicity of the original interface

MPlayerX works great! Thanks Everyone for the suggestion! How can I put it in Launchpad?

if you downloaded it from the appstore it should already be in trackpad. However, the developer isn't updating it from the appstore anymore so you have to get it from his website. once you download the dmg, you can drag the application into your applications folder.

I use mplayerx and it plays everything fine :)

movist, all the way

You can customize many options including subtitles etc..

my 2nd option is vlc player.

I use both side by side with different configurations.
