Current setup:

So right now I have an imac hooked up to my tv which is about 20 feet away. I have a 50 foot hdmi cable running up through the wall, into the ceiling, and dropped through a hdmi/thunderbolt 3 adapter so it's all hidden and nice looking. I primarily use itunes or VLC to play movies/music videos on the tv.

Future goal:

I'll be upgrading my tv in the next few months to a fancy new 4k screen... which means I need to replace the HDMI cable since older cables can't support the higher resolution.

It's about 50 bucks to just get some better hdmi cables.

I looked at the "4k apple tv" box which seems like it can wirelessly make my tv into a second screen from my imac, but 180 bucks seems steep considering I already have an xbox 1 for Netflix.

Is there something else I should look into? Another wireless way to use an external tv like it's a monitor that's plugged in, like the Fire Stick? Thanks everyone, hope this makes sense!

You could get a 4K TV that has/will have built in AirPlay.

This was recently announced for a couple TV manufacturers, including Samsung and LG and others......

there are some options for streaming content from an embedded situation built into the TV
an app to stream from your iMac -> new TV directly
some newer tv"s have an Ethernet interface
