What's the best way to stream external drive photos and videos to ipad?

Hoping you guys can save some google time for me. I don't have a cloud external drive. Just USB 3 into my mac. I use phanfare to view on my ipad currently but it's quality is not the best. Viewing innetwork I'm sure I can view in full hd.

I came across plex. What do you all use that need this?

If you're just looking to sync photos and videos to your iPad, well, iTunes works pretty well.

For photos, I have some smart albums in iPhoto that I share via iTunes. Whenever I sync, the photos are added to my iOS devices automatically.

Videos can be a little more work. If you're talking about videos that are in iPhoto, then the technique above works. If you're talking about movies like you buy on DVD, then I just manually manage them in iTunes since they take up so much room.
