Would like to grab a used iMac for my parents, they would rather have an iMac than a mac mini, they hate wires. They have iPads so I would like one that is compatible with handoff and continuity. Is there any special years that are better than others?

I know that for a Mac mini 2012 can be upgraded while the 2014 can't. Does anything similar hold true for iMac's?

I'm still on an early 2009 24" base. Still quick enough for me.

They would loose handoff and continuity features, I wasn't sure if there was a model year after 2012 that was still upgradable.

I would say go with a late 2012 or beyond. This way you could possibly find one with a Fusion Drive or SSD. Yes the drives can not be upgraded with anything after late 2012. On the 27" the RAM is able to be upgraded, but not on the 21". It is the slim iMac and runs much cooler than the older thicker iMacs. I have owned a 2007 20.5", 2011 27" and late 2012. All have been good iMacs but the 2012 runs much cooler, is still able to run the most current OS and is generally the best iMac I have ever owned.

Just something to offer in your decision making. Hope this helps some.
