Hi all. I'd like to buy a Macbook pro 15" ( the top one. The same configuration as Macbook pro 17" ). Where to buy it cheaper ( no taxes or good discounts) online or NYC area?
Regards
Ricardo

The problem with NY is tax, both from the stores and from places like amazon. However, you said NYC area, so if you have a shipping address in a nearby place like New Jersey, where I live, then Amazon (limited options), or B&H Photo which has a number of custom BTO models in stock, most models with attractive prices - below Apples.

Here is a list of models available from B&H, which is a superb store, especially if you are a photographer like me.

One other option, is MicroCenter.com in northern NJ which has a few 15" models and only charges 3% tax (in the NJ store). They have some nice deals on at times, especially on the 13" models.

Thanks Vantage Point! Actualy, Im from Brazil . I just asked about NYC because Im going there in 1 month so I'd buy the laptop there or ship to my hotel . Here in Brazil I would pay almost 3 times these prices. No way! ; )

What about Macmall.com? Is it a safety place to buy?

If you are going the NYC then just take a cab to best buy or an apple store nearby and pick one up. It'll save you the cost of shipping and if you have any problems you can just take it right back and not have to send it to a company and wait for them to send a replacement or fix your unit.

Thanks jwm2! The problem is the tax. Its almost 200 usd. I could pay for the Apple care almost. The best way is buying from JR ( no shipping cost and no tax)with a NJ adress as our friend said. However I have no friend who lives in NJ so I probably would buy from a store in NYC.
Do you guys know if I buy close to Woodbury I also would get free tax? I would go there for 1 day.

I think the Woodbury you are referring to is in NY state so 8% tax would apply.

Not a good idea because both 1) neither of these places carry any Mac in stock that have a special order options so you choices are limited. 2) B&H Photo has lower prices than either of these place - this slightly offsets some of the tax.

You can order from MacMall, they are a reliable/trustworthy company. Just have it shipped to your hotel which would save on the tax. Most of these companies offer free shipping anyways, and even if they don't, for a laptop at most will be like 35-50$ as opposed to paying the nearly 200 for tax. Also in NYC I believe the tax is ilke 8.75% because there is city sales tax in addition to the state sales tax.

Thank you guys! I think there is no tax in Macmail. If so, its the best way. Otherwise, I would buy directly from Apple store.
Do you guys think Apple care is soo important or not?

Macmall now charges sales tax in most states and I believe NY is one of them. see the near bottom of this page in the link, "Macmall Vendor Info" which includes NY and also a email address to write Macmall about tax policy

As for Apple Care, first, you get a year to decide to purchase. Second, the best price I have found is from B&H Photo which I mentioned above. They charge only $244 for 3 years of AC. I debated getting it and waited and then decided to pass - my MBP is 14 months old but you can buy it anytime in the first 12 months.

You can try ordering from Newegg they have a few new Macs but not much selection. They are mainly a Windows PC seller. You could also buy any upgrades at this time.

Hey all. As told here, I tried to buy the Macbook at Macmall but they don't accept shipping it to my hotel. I tried also MacConnection and they don't accept international CC. Now I just need to now where I can get the Macbook pro 15 or 17 with the best price in NYC or in a website which can ship that to my hotel.

Ricardo

I would go to Best Buys around the city and look for open box deals. If you don't find a great deal that way then order it off Amazon

The best deals are consistently with B&H Photo at 420 9th Avenue. They are a large and reputable firm, and visiting their store is a genuinely unique experience. If you're reconciled to paying sales tax, give them a try.
