I got a wifi only iPad for my mom for mothers day because I thought there was an open wifi accessible from her house (it works for laptops). But nothing shows up as available on the wifi network list on her iPad.

I wanted to know what's the cheapest way for her to get a usable wifi at home. I don't think she would be a very heavy data user. Would something from clear or some type of my-fi be the best bet? Or a router thing?

How about typing in the wifi name manually (one that works for laptops)? Not all wireless networks let their name be visible.

Unless the "open wifi" is there for public use, unauthorized use of a wireless network is a misdemeanor in NY.

"S 156.05 Unauthorized use of a computer.
A person is guilty of unauthorized use of a computer when he or she
knowingly uses, causes to be used, or accesses a computer, computer
service, or computer network without authorization.
Unauthorized use of a computer is a class A misdemeanor."

Either paying for internet via the cable company or a wireless provider is your only option. I'm sure the iPad doesn't have the same wifi range for her to steal the internet like she can on the laptop.

Cable, it will not be listed, but call and ask for the lowest package, mine use to run 17.00 a month.
