I have a MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Mid 2010. I just recently upgraded the ram to 8gigs, replaced the stock 500gig drive with a 128 OCZ Vertex 4 SSD, and moved the stock 500gig drive into the optibay.
So now I have some questions and i'm looking for any/all optimization tips. I've been reading through the old threads but I'm somewhat worried they are out of date. Aside from installing the thing I haven't really done anything other then setting up a clean install on the SSD and slowly moving over application data from the stock drive.
1. Do I still need to worry about spotlight on the SSD? Since SSD are now pretty common in Macs is this still an issue? Is there something I need to do?
2. How do I make sure the optibay drive doesn't kill my battery life. I'm already planning on only putting very specific things on it. Like my photo library, download folder, and videos. So i've read I can just put it to sleep after say 2 mins of not being used. I've also read I should turn off spotlight on the drive because it'll keep waking it up. Is there anyway to have spotlight only run on the drive if it is plugged in?
3. Does it make sense to repartition the optibay drive and keep a backup OSX install on it? Can I shrink the existing partition? It is my old install already.
4. The App Store is telling me most of my apps are already installed. I think it is getting confused because the stock hard drive is mounted and the applications are installed in my old OSX instance. Anyway to fix this? Should I just move the apps over or delete them?
5. Do I need to do anything else so that OSX plays nice with my SSD? I know I could enable TRIM but it's my understanding that the OCZ Vertex 4 have pretty good firmware and don't need it.
6. Anything I'm missing?
Thanks for the help!
