What's the deal with Leopard?

So my new Alum 24" iMac has arrived, I installed Leopard and now my external hard drive won't mount...i've had to force shut down 3 times within an hour for 3 separate reasons.
Why has Apple released this new operating system that so far is only making life a whole lot more complicated and stressful?
