When you go from a macrumors regular to macrumors xxxx with the x's being numbers what do the numbers mean?

What's the deal with the numbers under usernames?

Perhaps the numbers should be modernized
I mean the rate at which new chips come out is by far exceeding those who can get that number of posts.
Not everyone relates to those chipset numbers.
Bump down the scale a bit perhaps? G3 for 2000 posts, the new intel chips for higher ones etc?
