There are posts after posts discussing and showing pictures of iPhone 17 pro/max aluminum scratches but iPhone has been using Aluminum on the base models for years and I don’t see the complaints on them. Is the aluminum on base models more scratch resistant or what?

Old Pro models and base models had a glass back cover. The plateaus on those models were all glass.

The 17 Pro/Max is bare aluminum at the plateau. And that plateau has sharp edges which is sensitive to scratches.

I think the issue is the sharp angle Apple used for the camera plateau. The anodization doesn’t adhere to that sharp corner well and therefore it scratches easily. This hasn’t been an issue on the regular phones because the camera bump is made of glass. And the aluminum band around the edge has smooth gentle curves that are easy to annodize.

So the pros seem to be more prone to scratching around the edges of the camera plateau. It’s pruely a cosmetic issue. Everything beyond that is the usual routine of people blowing an issue way out of proportion when a new iPhone launches.
