The smart thing to do is to *not* use the default sounds. I changed all of the audio alerts to other sounds.
I've been in meetings when someone's phone makes a noise and literally 5-7 people look at their devices. Stupid.
The key ones to change are incoming e-mail, phone ringtone, and incoming text. I deliberately went out on the Internet to find non-standard sounds. Now, I have an iPhone that sounds like nobody else's. No more knee jerk Pavlovian head spin when someone else's iPhone chimes.
I'm using an "Old Telephone" ringtone for incoming calls, but it's not the same as the one included in iOS.
I also installed a "silent" ringtone which I assign to certain people and repeat wrong number callers. There are a few custom tones for certain friends and family members.
