In iTunes it only says: Windows-formatted iPods cannot be updated, I have an iPod mini and just formatted it in Mac file system, and after updating i see no difference, so what is the advantage of formating in macintosh format? I don't see any, also Windows-formatted is much more compatible i think

You can't apply software updates to Windows-formatted iPods using a Mac. You'd have to connect it to a PC in order to get the updates installed. Otherwise, they behave fine with Macs.

But Mac-formatted iPods can't be used on Windows at all.
