What's the next big innovation in Mac OS?
Will there be a next big innovation? or will we just keep getting year on year improvement iterations just making what we already have better and better.

I don't have that much to add here apart from getting the conversation started.
My reasonin for this is we had the OS9 to OSX/MacOS transition. It was a really revolutionary step. Sure it was just an evolved neXt but it was a juge change from the classic OS and really improved how we did everything. It was a totally different way of thinking what an OS should be on a deeper level.

Do you think Apple is thinking about this also?

Some of the changes in Big Sur could suggest that touch screen Macs are on the way. Some controls are larger. There's more space between items in drop-down menus. All of it looks like it could accommodate a pointer with more surface area than the standard macOS cursor, in other words your finger.

Don't get me wrong Apple are always going to keep the existing mouse pointer, but some of the changes suggest that they are thinking about touch interfaces on Mac OS.

I can't speak for anyone else, but "a big innovation" for me is AirPlay 2! Can't wait to pair both HomePods with my Mac.

A sudden major change by basing it off Linux and making it open source. So, that Linux can finally conquer the desktop market with ease of use and major software made available for it. Along with a bevi of distros based off macOS. Along with support for ARM and Intel long into the future. Even opening the possibility of a current macOS running on PowerPC again.

One can only dream.🙏

I'd say it'll just become more iPad OS like and iPad OS will get more Mac like. Perhaps the x86 translation for ARM progressing to allow x86 VM's of Windows and other x86 OSes.
