I just watched a video about the 2017 MBP and the guy mentions and shows a green notification light next to the camera. I have the 2016 model and can see this as well (but not lit). What does it show? Only when the camera is active or can it indicate system wide notifications such as new email etc...?

It indicates the camera is on and it has been on Macs for quite some years now (let me do some research).

Nope, just an indicator for the webcam. Apple used to have a glowing light to visually display when the laptop was in sleep mode, but that is long gone at this point.
