At this point in time, is it just a gimmick for shopping apps or social media?
it doesn’t seem developed enough to do anything interesting yet.
is it worth paying the extra for the lidar versions of iPhone 12?

Much better AR which is a big focus for Apple right now. If it’s anything customers want we’ll have to wait and see

AR is for future proofing. The one parts of LILDAR i care about is for better portrait mode/better auto focus.

Hopefully software will eventually make this more useful.
But Apple being Apple, they might add more features to it next year and restrict it to the new iPhones to sell it as something new ;)

I suspect Apple is seeding the ground for something larger (possibly AR glasses in the future), but for now, there doesn’t really seem to be much use for it.

That’s exactly what the iPhone 12 line is about. I feel like it’s ahead of it’s time with features that aren’t really ready for right now. It’s made me question my preorder but I have an iPhone X that’s slowing down so I decided to just go ahead and trade it in for the iPhone 12 Pro.
