What's the process for Apple Purchase, verizon upgrade buy back plan

I've looked through the posts, (and while it's probably in there), I cannot seem to find it.

I'm mid contract on Verizon. It will be a 749 dollar purchase to buy a 32gb 5s at this point, although VZ is offering $300 odd dollars to buy back my existing iPhone 5. Therefore, can I...

1. Walk into Apple, buy the phone for $749, and then walk to Verizon and return the phone for the $300 odd dollar credit, or must I buy the physical phone from Verizon store (which as everyone knows has more or less no availability, whereas with a little planning, you can get each day in apple store.

When I traded my phone in I asked for a friend and they told me they did not have to buy a phone from them directly they would still take the phone as a trade in and give you a credit That could be applied to your bill or used to buy stuff in the store
