What's the shortcut to maximise a program's window in mavericks?

For some unknown reason excel, reader and a few other apps do not utilize the screen estate well and every time I have to click the green plus button the maximise the window. Is there a keyboard shortcut to do this?

It's Control-Command-F.

EDIT: That's actually how to get into fullscreen. There is no shortcut for Zooming, you have to set that manually as shown here:

There's not a default, but you can create one.

Go to  menu > System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts

Select App Shortcuts

Press the [+] key at the bottom

Application: All Applications

Menu Title: Zoom Window

Keyboard Shortcut: Whatever you want to use (I tested with Shift-Option-Command-Z for example, should be something not used for other purposes)
