I'm trying to find the tiniest USB-C memory stick, the one that that protrudes the least; so something similar to the Samsung FIT Plus.

My Google fu has failed me so far…

Many of these have both USB type C and type A connectors so they are not as small as they could be. A few of these share the same design.

My Google fu has also failed.

I can't find anything smaller than the fit plus.
But the fit plus is USB Type A.
Maybe another question is, what is the smallest USB Type A (female) to USB Type C (male) adapter? Could the Fit Plus with such adapter be smaller than the USB-C flash devices I linked?

I've been searching high and low for one myself that sits almost flush like the USB-A SanDisk Fit does.

I did write SanDisk a letter asking them to consider making a 'Fit' model that uses USB-C. I wonder if they will make one if they get enough inquiries?

For now, I find comfort in not having failed alone. 😅

My temporary solution is simply to use to the second slot provided by my SD-card reader (Satechi); as long as it needs to be unplugged before transport anyways this is the best solution.

For technical reasons, I don't believe that is currently possilbe a USB-C flash drive to reach the form factor of the Samsung FIT+.
I believe the smallest drive you can get ATM is the Sony Microvault in terms of size.

Looking at the innards of the connector itself it should be possible to get the size down to protruding less than 10mm; or even half that. But I don't know how much smarts you have to put into a USB-C cable/device; and don't know what chips are available for that. If I find myself with too much spare time (as if) I'll look into this, if possible maybe even have something made.

When I get around to it I'll probably just hide away my https://satechi.net/products/alumin...sd-card-reader-adapter?variant=12162786001010 behind my display, with a memory card permanently in it; I don't need to have it mobile anyways, and I've been looking for an excuse to buy this one: https://satechi.net/products/satechi-aluminum-type-c-micro-sd-card-reader?variant=27068643337.

The problem is that a)the form factor of the usb-c is smaller than the usb-a and b) the usb-c male can placed both ways in a usb-c female socket.
the fact that the usb-A has this plastic “foot” to prevent wrong positioning when placed, used by flash manufacturers to “hide” inside the usb connector large part of the flash memory. That’s not possible with the usb-c and the flash memory has to be soldered in the back of the usb connector. The size of the flash memory has to be reduced significantly in order to match the form factor of the connector.

My very not thought through concept for an MVP would be to just use a microSD card on its side; the width of that would be an acceptable height of this product.

Good luck persuading Apple to add another port.

In the army , we used to stick in the back of the screen any stuff that was light enough and needed to stay connected with a wire with a laptop.
Not a very pretty solution but it worked and I’m still using it to keep my external SSD connected with my MB Pro usb-c port when travelling.

Another port?

I meant designing a USB-C solution, so an external one; but with the memory consisting of a microSD card that's on its side to minimise how much the stick protrudes.

Buuut… now I'm actually starting to get real curious about what one could do if not afraid of a bit more brutal modding. I so need to read me som USB-C specs, and see where I could fit what in my MBP16. 🤓

Old thread but same question please. Thought I’d reply rather than start another with same question.

Is there now a small USB-C only (not dual) to use on iPad’s with USB-C port?

Thinking of getting a 64Gb mini, which for 95% of the time will be more than enough, only maybe needing more of took on a holiday once a year for some video stuff.

I know Netflix, Prime video only goes on internal memory but for other stuff could go on external.

On a side note, on a 64Gb mini how much is free space please?

Thanks

Seems to me that almost any flash drive with a USBc plug may still have a "body" just large enough to block adjacent ports when plugged in.

I realize this isn't what the OP was looking for, but might be a halfway decent alternative for flash drives with the standard USBa port:

Remember back around 2016, when Apple first introduced the USBc ports on the 2016 MBP, and how there were people in here telling us "USBa is dead" ???

It’s not USB A we’re after though it’s USB-C drive with no dongle etc

This just came out, looks like it sticks out about 20mm. It has better specs than the other no name ones though, and Samsung flash drives are usually pretty reliable.
