I recently moved into a new apartment, and there's an odd-looking projection sticking out of a wall plate in the bedroom (see pic)

Any idea what this thing might be?

Is that a cable/coax outlet? I'd assume that thing would be threaded, and could just screw off of the female cable connector. If that does wind up being some kind of door stop, that's a new one for me!

On a coax like that, it's almost like some kind of test device. I just don't have a good sense of the details, maybe a closer photo (especially if you take it off, which I would ...)

Now I'm genuinely curious :D

It's an NSA Dingus. Whomever lived there before was under surveillance by the government at a very high level. I wouldn't be surprised if the apartment if filled with bugs & cameras. You should definitely move ASAP.

My guess is painters forgot to remove a cap put on a cable TV jack to keep the paint off it.

Fanciest cap I've ever seen. Painters would just use tape.
And they do make caps -- coax terminations -- but they still don't look like what's in the picture.
They also make coax antennas but the pic doesn't look like that either.
The plate doesn't look like a standard coax plate either -- too narrow.

It a locking device installed by cable provider to prevent unauthorized use of the cable connection. Generally you need a special tool to remove it...

Didn't know cable companies were that dumb.
One screwdriver to remove the plate, one cutter to cut the cable, one stripper/crimper to attach a new coax connector.
:D
