whats up with the battery consumption

Something doesnt seem right
screen brightness at 50%, keylights off, no cd in the drive, NO usb devices connected, no runaway proccesses, and only a ethernet wire plugged in. How is that 14W?
even with brightness at 20% it is using 7.4 watts

Let's see, you have a ton of useless crap open(just look at that menu bar) and you're paging out like mad.

You're lacking RAM and are using too much stuff at once to get good battery life. Simple as that.

Yeah, Skype will fire up your discrete graphics chip instead of using the integrated one - that will use more power.
