If you upgrade the hard drive on the white to 80 gigs, it would have the same specs as the black MacBook; yet it costs ~$150 less. What's up with a $150 pice just for the case to be in black. I think that is a little cheap.

Supply and demand. Ancient law of economics.

They'll have no problem selling them at that price.

Black plastic is more expensive than white, I thought everybody knew that?

They're taking the piss, but they will get away with it, and they know it. Watch them fly of the shelves.

Yeah, Apple is getting away with it. There are people out there that are just into the aesthetics. Maybe people that want to distinguish themselves. I don't know. I think it's a freakin ripoff.

What does this mean exactly? I have seen this quite a bit recently from our friends in the UK but I am not familiar with the phrase. Anyone care to enlighten me?

Means to make a fool of you, for example. They're ripping you off for no reason and they know they can get away with it, so they're making a fool of you, taking the micky, taking the piss, making a monkey of you etc. ;)

i can see the $ bump if it is limited edition but it is not.
also, last time, i checked you spend more time looking at the inside of the macbook than the outside.
let the fashion happy pay the extra $150.
its their perooooogative. -bobby brown

My 'emo kid' daughter will definitely want the black MB for college this year, to match the black iPod she's getting for graduation. Hey, if she wants to cover the difference, I'll order one for her.;)

Did you actually read the specs?

Black is a DUAL CORE.
White is a single.
That is the reason for the difference.

Black is the way to go.

The Difference

Black has 20GB more HD space, that is the difference. Seems fair enough to me, it will stand out from the crowd, just not sure what this whole "glossy display" malarchy is all about.

Even when you upgrade the white one to an 80GB HDD it's still cheaper than the Black version, so you must be paying a premium for the different colour.

But its only like £40 to upgrade the HDD to 80gb. Your still paying £90 premium for black.

Glossy screen are like a lot of the laptops out there (the sony vaios etc..) and whilst they can be a bit reflective in direct sunlight, they offer more contrast and much more vibrant colour.

Let's face it they are replacing the current screens 12" and they are as dull as dishwater and in sunlight forget it.
They are a major improvement from what we have...

lets just face facts that "professional video" and the ilk, wont be using a laptop as their main video screen for final edits....

LCDs, always suck when it comes to colors vs a CRT

i think its because, well, CRT is analog, LCD is digital.

color is light, light is analog.

Which can be upgraded on the white one for $50.

So you're paying $150 more just for the color. Did you even read the thread?

The black ones have a matte finish. Dunno if the white ones do as well, but that finish might be more durable.

And the proof of it being worth the extra $$ will be in the sales figures... which I think will back up that pricing decision.

This is very true. However, video is moving in the direction of being completely digital, at which point LCD will be more accurate, as it will reflect the units people will view the video on (other than theater screens, but this may change some day as well).

But yes, agreed completely; 5 years in the printing industry and currently having to color proof cd layouts, CRT is far more reliable, though nothing beats an Iris print (except a cromalin print, but that's a bit pricey)...

I can't wait to see how badly these black Macbooks will show off scratches with a couple of days use. On white, scratches are less visible and really only seen in light. With the black finish (I assume it's similar to the same material on the black iPod nano/video), scratches show a lot.

It's not. If you'd read the thread, you'd know it's a matte finish, not a shiny one.

business users wont buy a white laptop, thus apple can satisfy their needs and make a nice profit, steve probably does not "approve" of black and allows it as a necessary evil.

i so want a black macbook, but alas i cannot abide by GMA950, i just cant do it.
