So, you're ineligible for the 3Gs, simply jailbreak and unlock and put it on eBay. More than likely you'll make up 75% or more of the cost of having to purchase the 3Gs @ that un-qualifying price.

I purchased all the iPhones. When 2G came out, I paid $550 for it. I got some of that money back from Apple (or was it AT&T). Used the 2G for one year, jailbroke/unlocked it, sold it. Used that money for the 3G. Now, I plan on doing the same thing. If I can get $300 or more for my 3G, I only have to pay ~$130 for the new 3Gs.

If you plan on giving your 3G to your gf or whoever, u're hosed.

The math is really simple...:)

Everybody that bought an iPhone 3G in July/August/September of last year will be eligible for the $199/$299 upgrade price..

I think you are misinterpreting AT&T's statement. This is what AT&T said:

We're now pleased to offer our iPhone 3G customers who are upgrade eligible in July, August or September 2009 our best upgrade pricing, beginning Thursday, June 18.

Some people who bought the iPhone 3G in July/August/September 2008 are not eligible for an upgrade until December 2009 or later.

^^^Which goes to show - if undeserving people whine loudly enough, they can get what they want. I miss the days when people valued their RESPONSIBILITIES as much as their (perceived) RIGHTS

AT&T didn't give up anything, that's their standard upgrade scenario. Those who pay more get upgraded earlier.

I agree with the OP. They should never have done the subsidy because all it's done is turn iPhone users into a bunch of whiners. The amount of whining regarding the original iPhone's high prices pales in comparison to current iPhone users' whining (especially those who started with the 3G).

He’s got a point although I agree that this isn’t exactly the best precedence for AT&T to set with any phone, iPhones included.

This is not true. I bought my iPhone last September and my upgrade is still shown as 5/28/2010. If I want a Gs now, I pay full price.
