I'm new to Mac, and liking my new used MBP running Snow Leopard, but wondering:

What do Mac users do with their desktops? Do you put program icons (or aliases) on them as in Windows? It seems this is what the dock is for. Right now, all my desktop displays is drives; the main hard drive and any other drives I plug in, such as USB flash, external for backup or CDs and DVDs...

... is this all it's meant to do?

I use it solely as temporary storage.

i.e. I place files on my desktop before I decide to move them to the trash or move them to a designated folder.

99% of the time it has nothing on it.

Hey the Geektool looks fun. Something to play with when I need a break from actual work. And the idea of thinking of the desktop as a kind of weigh station before putting content in its proper folder is good too. Thanks.

But yeah, between OS X's finder and dock, there doesn't really seem to be any need to load the desktop with program icons or anything...

I use it as a dumping ground for temporary stuff that gets moved to where it should be at the end of the day. :)

This. I don't get why people put their app aliases on the desktop.

I have a bunch of frequently accessed files on my desktop. Usually that means porn.

You can do whatever you want with it...some people like to keep it clean & tidy...I, on the other hand, have many icons and it is quite untidy/messy :D
