woke up this morning and it was like this

there is slight discoloring around the larger gray blotch, however it is only noticeable when there is a white background

i've had my phone since april of 2009, and purchased apple care with it, but i'm not sure how long it covers it.

Apple Care extends the warranty to two years, so you're still covered. I couldn't say what's wrong with your phone but it's something Apple Care should cover if it just suddenly appeared.

it seems that you LCD some how has become damaged. If you are still under apple care call them and have them replace it.

Yep, looks like a screen problem.
If you're still under applecare you will get a replacement with no probs.
