I did a complete Restore without using backups on my iPhone 3G 8gig, and it now shows 7.1Gigs total. I remember that 2.1 showed 7.08?
 
Well the firmware isn't stored on your "regular" space, it has it's space reserved on the flash memory.

So your free space shouldn't be effected
