iPod What's your favorite iPod Classic?

I'm referring to the main lineup (including the very first iPod, the 4th gen iPod Photo, etc.), and not just the ones that Apple explicitly called "Classic".

Honestly I'm getting tired of the limited space in my iPhone and modern iPods. And considering also how Jonathan Ive killed the iPhone and the iPod Touch as dedicated music devices, I'm seriously planning to buy an old-school 80 GB model or bigger. Also there are lots of things that can be done on those little babies! Installing a bigger hard disk, an SSD, a Bluetooth receptor, etc.

Anyway. Which one do you think was the best generation and WHY?

I preferred the separation of the controls from the wheel.

Although my experience is limited, I prefer the 5th or 5.5. The Wolfson DAC sounds better to my ears than any other I've heard. I had an 80gb converted to 240gb so size is an issue for me too. Would love to see Apple build something comparable.

What do you mean by 7th gen? I guess the first revision of iPod Classic? If so, why not the latest one? I assume that one includes the Cirrus Logic DAC too.

He's referring to the current 160 GB, single platter classic that is currently for sale (what you have listed as 6G, 2nd revision). I think most people consider the original iPod classic to be the 6G (the 80 gb and 160 gb fat dual platter models from 2007), then the 120 gb classics from 2008 are considered the 6.5G (what you have listed as 6G, first revision), and the 2009+ 160 GB single platter units are the 7G.

iPod Mini

I don't know if this is considered an iPod classic but my favorite is the iPod Mini. This is because the memory is upgradable without a need for an adapter. Just grab a compact flash on your favorite electronics store or online, replace the Micro Drive and then you'll have a rugged high capacity player. Also if the battery is dead, you can replace it without soldering.

If you want a upgradable/serviceable music player then get yourself a Mini. The batteries for it as well as compact flash are still readily available today (2014).

I have the 5.5 U2 edition 30GB and love it. Sound quality is excellent. It's definitely a keeper.

You're probably not going to find a new 5.5 gen. Maybe refurbished. But yes, it may need a new battery, or hdd.

The 7th gen is the current selling model, I just bought one new from Best buy last Monday. First click wheel iPod since my 2g nano. Love it already.

I'd just go for a new 7th gen. You get the 1yr warranty, new battery and hdd and you're set.

I'm sure that just a couple of months ago there were some brand-new 5G units on Amazon, but apparently they are gone now.

Certainly there must be people selling these old units in their closed packages and all, but I doubt those are cheap, since are being offered as collection items at this point.

Thanks to all.Im wondering how much sound quality difference I would hear hunting out a 5.5 and perhaps i should just go with the latest 7g version? I have a 7g new ipod nano and that sound quality coming through the Earpods is fantastic.

I never really used the 3rd Gen or 4th Gen iPods, but I did have the 5th Gen model. Loved it. My vote does go to the 5.5 Gen model, due to the clearer screen and higher capacity. The first gen was ground breaking, but the 5.5 Gen brought the best tech to the table, plus it seems faster then the 6th and 7th Gen and has better audio, IMO.

Found a vendor selling refurbished 5.5 replacing battery,shell and adding 120G capacity for 165 dollars.Does this seem like a good deal?

For me, it would be the iPod 5th gen (iPod w/ video). It was my first Apple product.

5th Gen for in the glovebox for the receiver to operate. Those were built like tanks! And if I ever needed a quick external drive it doubled as that, just watch Runaway Jury haha

What I find interesting is that the most voted iPods are probably the most popular ones, i.e those must be the first iPod for many people.

In this regard there is an obvious bias towards the latest iPod Classic and the iPod Video, though I wonder if those are actually the best ones, or if the people that voted them own more models.

My favourite is the first generation, as at the time I was completely amazed by it - especially the thinness! How times have changed...
I loved the way the click wheel actually was mechanical, too.

Closely followed by the 5.5G iPod with video - I had a black one and it looked amazing. Though I'm probably a bit biased, as the 1G and 5.5G were the only 'normal' iPods I owned.

I love my Classic and thick 5.5G to death, but I think my favorite is actually the 3rd gen. My cousin still has one in use and I just love the red backlit touch buttons. It's unique.
