I have searched the whole internet but couldn't find the answer: is it possible to transfer WhatsApp messages from an Android device to an iOS device?

if you have it under the same number, wouldnt backing up your chat history allow you to restore it on ios

No, since Android makes a back-up to Google Drive snd iOS to iCloud.
