Hello all,
First of all, I am very surprised that there is whatsapp backhround activity whereas I have background app refresh turned off, for all apps.
Is there a way to turn it off? It drains the battery.
I am using latest iOS with iPhone 6s. Overall I have noticed big drop in battery usage after an upgrade from iOS 10 to 11. I also hate tye reason why I had to move to iOS 11. The Mail app did not sinchtonize with my Gmail account and Apple support asked me to upgrade to iOS 11. It fixed the problem, but now I have battery issues.

This is a recurring issue for a long time if you Google it. WhatsApp will always be in the background possibly to sync and ready to push notification for incoming message from their server. Basically, whenever you use it you’ll bring it up to foreground and then it will go back into background when not in use. It may extend to other messenger as well.

Thank you for the answer. Really weird. In this case what does the „backhround app refresh off” do? I can tell that it is off in settings for whatsapp.

It controls one aspect of what apps can do in the background, but it doesn't control the general ability that the OS itself provides for processes to run in the background.
