Whatsapp on do not disturb mode

guys - iphone 7 here with latest software but whatsapp still manages to ring in do not disturb phone. I thought apple products had very strict control over apps and coming from an android world, this is displeasing. It happened frequently in android

Are notifications still coming through when you're still using your phone? DND should work when your phone is locked and you're not using it. Notifications will still come through when you're using your phone and it's unlocked.
