Hi!

my wife finally got an Apple Watch. She downloaded WatchChat 2, but the app doesn't connect while away from her phone.

Does anybody know of an alternative?

Many thanks!

I don't believe there is one as they all use Whatsapp Web to communicate.

I assume she has a GPS watch? It'd probably work without the phone nearby if she had a Cellular one.

I use WatchChat 2, it's great but I wish they had the swipe keyboard

WhatsApp is doing some revisions to its architecture that will offer native support for WhatsApp clients running on multiple devices all accessing the same account without needing to use the web interface workaround. I'm hoping that at that stage WhatsApp might build out its client to also support Apple Watch (and iPad). This report from just 9 days ago seems to indicate that the new release is fairly close now...

(The above page puts up a "register for free" pop-up in the middle of the screen but I could still scroll and read the content behind the pop-up. It's not a long article.)

She does have the cellular version but WatchChat 2 doesn’t seem to work while away from the phone. :(

Here is hoping. Thanks for the link.

I use WatchChat 2. It doesn't work without a connection to the companion app on the iPhone via bluetooth. I'm not aware of any WhatsApp clients for the Apple Watch that can work if you are away from your phone unfortunately.

Is there any decent messenger which works on Apple Wach Cellular that doesn’t require a constant connection to the phone?

She wants to leave the phone at home when leaving the house but still be able to receive WhatsApp messages.

So ignoring any standalone apps, I do receive WhatsApp notifications on my watch when it is connected to the internet via LTE and I'm away from my phone, and I am able to reply to these messages via the notification. I can't send a message to someone without receiving a notification, so it's not perfect, but it might go some way to giving your wife the functionality she is after.

I wonder why this doesn’t work for us.

I bet his phone is still online at home. How else can notifications get pushed to the watch without any standalone app. That he can respond, likely meens that it is a notification like also used for imessages, where you respond directly without opening the app. I am impressed that works on the watch.

If you are still not getting any notifications through, then check watch app->notifications and go down the list and make sure it is enabled for the app. It should as default.

edit:
1. To receive SMS, MMS, or push notifications from third-party apps on your cellular Apple Watch, your paired iPhone must be powered on and connected to Wi-Fi or cellular, but it doesn't need to be nearby. You also need to be signed in to iMessage on your iPhone.
