Whatsapp question?

Hey guys, I have a really annoying problem. I started using whatsapp recently. In the app you tap on anywhere in the message screen to minimize the keyboard and then tap on the text box to maximize it. The thing is it doesn't always work for me. Sometimes it does and sometimes it refuses to do so. Am I doing it wrong? I tried everything double tapping, trying different areas on the screen and even reinstalling the app. It starts working sometimes if I leave the app and come back to it. Or if I close it from the app tray and then re enter. If anyone could help me out I'd be grateful. Thanks.
