WhatsApp has announced the introduction of chat themes, giving users the freedom to personalize their conversations using custom colors for both chat bubbles and backgrounds. The encrypted messaging platform is also adding 30 new wallpaper options to help users further customize their chat experience.

The new customization options let you either choose from preset themes that modify both chat bubbles and backgrounds simultaneously, or mix and match colors to create your own unique combinations.

You can apply a unified theme across all your conversations and channels, but the new options mean you also have the flexibility to customize individual chats with different themes. WhatsApp notes that these customizations are visible only to the user who sets them, so personal preferences won't affect other people in the conversation.

To set a default theme for all chats, navigate to Settings ➝ Chats ➝ Default chat theme. For individual chat customization, simply tap the chat name at the top of the screen. The new theme options are currently rolling out and will become available to all WhatsApp users over the next few weeks.

I’ve been wanting this for years, so bored of WhatsApp dull green bubbles! I don’t have this option yet though

I use WhatsApp for a group chat related to church work and it updated automatically, and I discovered that the mere act of opening it after update added the widget to my SmartStack without a "delete" option, and I had to long press and hit "suggest less" to get rid of it. I've never had that happen before.

Nice job meta! Now, now it's time for Apple to allow some iMessage customization, with backgrounds and such.

I barely use my phone for messaging and it even bores me.
As someone who has been pro-iMessage for as long as possible (if you have an iPhone I’m only chatting you on iMessage 😄), I like some of the features WhatsApp has been adding. Today I noticed the chat filtering feature. Neat. Already made a few filters.

Yes, there are other apps (like Telegram) with a much quicker pace of new features, but I’m about as little as possible. And in Germany you can’t do without WhatsApp. My children’s activities groups and so many groups are created there by default.

I wish iMessage feature updates are not so tied to major iOS releases.

Where’s the Auto AI function so I don’t have to look or reply to messages or voice calls again. Of an AI can do that for me it’s one less thing to do.

I can just leave my phone at home to do it’s own thing while I go to work and get AI to do my job too.

Well I’m hoping I still have a job, it’s Friday and I’ve still not been let go. 😀

Strange thing is that I’ve had this feature since early January, no one else on my household had it, but it went away with the latest app update, which installed yesterday. It was very nice to remove the horrendous green default bubble. I hope I gain back access very soon.

Don't use it much but still very nice to have the option to customize it. Will definitely try out the new customization options.

Strange. I had these new chat themes for 2 months already, and they’ve been gone for 2 days now??
