WhatsApp today provided its TestFlight users with a new Apple Watch app for testing purposes, which means a version of WhatsApp for the wrist could be coming soon.

The app supports reading WhatsApp messages, sending replies, sending message reactions, sharing voice messages, and more, without the need to open the app on another device.

A connected iPhone with the WhatsApp app installed is required to use the Apple Watch app, and it is only available to beta testers at this time.

WhatsApp has not previously offered an Apple Watch app. There's no word on when a public launch might happen.

This app will be jinxed next year. Unless it gets access to the health data, it will solely and solely be for that purpose.

OMG, this is huge, SMS / Text / iMessages are not a thing in most of the world, so having the messages app in the watch was meaningless, Whatsapp, OTOH, would give the cellular Apple Watch just enough functionality to make it viable for going out and leaving the phone at home on occasions.

Hope they do release it, I would be switching back to a cellular Apple Watch if this is the case.

Can we get more linked devices? Also when will usernames arrive. Also, can we get ability to login with password? Something that can be stored on iCloud keychain so we can login to more devices than if we don't have our phone nearby. Also, how about an option to storing encrypted messages on Whatsapp servers instead of requiring backup and restore. And the ability to make edits indefinitely so it functions more like a living “doc” as opposed to a static message.

All of them would be really great but I don't have my hope for them. However it would be great to increase the 4 device limit (which is +3 devices basically)

Since I personally never initiate a chat, replying to WhatsApp notifications on the Apple Watch covered 90% of my needs, but even I can’t wait for this.

looks cool and all, but I'm trying to have less Meta in my life, not more. Really trying to migrate my conversations over to Signal, but the network effect where I am is strong with WhatsApp.

That would be so nice.

F*** meta and their practices but this app is basically a must in the EU.

Why? What's Europe's fascination with WhatsApp? I don't get it. RCS is now fully rolled out and multiplatform. People who know better should start new conversations in their default messages app so their family and friends start to realize that WhatsApp isn't necessary. Why would people want to run all their personal and business communications through META of all companies?
