WhatsApp is testing the ability for images within chats to self-destruct, allowing the receiver to only view images once, without the ability to save them to their device.

Whatsapp-Feature.jpg

Screenshots shared by WABetaInfo, who frequently leaks and reports on WhatsApp's plans and upcoming features, show an interface in which the sender can choose an image to self-destruct. If an image is chosen to self-destruct, the receiver will have a one-time chance to view it and not be able to save or export the image to their device.

WABetaInfo says that WhatsApp has not implemented screenshot detection, which would alert the sender if a screenshot of the self-destructing photo was taken. WhatsApp's approach to the feature is similar to Instagram Direct stories, in which case an image or video is only viewable once before it expires. Other popular messaging apps such as Telegram have already included self-destructing images for some time.

WhatsApp User 1: Do you remember that self-destruct picture I sent last week?

WhatsApp User 2: No, I don’t.

WhatsApp User 1: *resend picture as self-destruct*

WhatsApp User 2: Listen if you don’t feel comfortable sending this picture and have to have it self-destruct, why are you sharing it.

WhatsApp User 1: I don’t want my contacts to save and/or share my pictures.

WhatsApp User 2: If you don’t trust those contacts then don’t share a picture, it’s as simple as that and limit watching Mission Impossible movies.

WhatsApp User 1: *confused as to why this contact does not feel that their cannot be trusted*

I wish WhatsApp would self-destruct.
Uh... I don't. I like having all my contacts use the same app regardless of the phone their using (iOS or Android).

I would, however, like to see Whatsapp go independent and be free of that robotic ghoul Zuckerberg.

This is interesting. Of course, once can always screenshot the picture. :D
I set my whatsapp to not auto-download any media in the first place. It can suck the storage of the phone pretty quickly if you have tons of groups sending useless memes videos.

Trivial to work around these kinds of things.

And, under the new TOS, Facebook still knows what you sent, who you sent it to, when you sent it, where you sent it from, where you were located when you sent it, all in the name of being able to pester you with targeted advertising.

If it's online, you might as well put it on a billboard. It's not private.

LOL, what about a screenshot? Thats iOS level, isn't it?
Even if WA incorporated screenshot detection like Telegram, one can always use a secondary device with a camera to take out a picture or video. If I had compelling evidence in a text, why bother to expose my hand that I taken a screenshot when a video or photo of the device and text would go undetected. This is just some lame attempt to portray User Privacy.

Facebook and Private/Privacy don’t belong together on the same line.

WA users should ask the question if EU has an agreement preventing WA data to be shared with Fb, then why not have it as the defacto globally. What happens if an EU WA user relocates for study or work to another country for example to the United States and transfers their phone number to a local America one, does their EU rights get dissolved or is it upheld. What metric does Fb/WA use to differentiate an EU citizen.

Gee, I can't imagine what sorts of images you'd need a self destruct for... LOL

IMHO better never to put over the Internet anything you wouldn't want published.
This has nothing to do with private protection.
What's the point? Is it about disgusting gruesome mutilation pictures or dirty child sex? I really have no idea what this is for.
And therefore completely uninteresting for people like me...

But are they really gone? That’s the real question.
The metadata probably reports a self-destruct text/picture/video has been sent. Metadata can be subpoenaed, the question arises also is that if a user has backup, does self-destruct also backup or not. Logic says no, but this is Fb/WA so who knows what really is and isn’t happening, you know it’s all for the small business’.

Great! So someone can harass you with images, like private parts you have no interest in seeing, and you have no proof that they are harassing you. Sounds like a great idea. Just like the rest of the "WOKE" world.

If I was doing any data collecting, pictures sent as self-destruct would be the most interesting ones to keep.

You can still delete messages within a short period. Got a friend who's a little weird and I got used to screenshot the notification previews because sometimes by the time I wanna reply the messages are already deleted...

Some people just expect you to reply right away and are pissed if you don't if you're, I don't know, busy.

Dunno about you, but when I get indecent/incriminating messages or photos, it's instant screenshot and "save as" for good measure. Don't worry, I keep those in a very encrypted file.

That is a very good question concerning this “new” feature. If someone is sending you illicit pictures or videos, chances are if you disagree with them and this side of this contact has been revealed the disassociate this contact and report any illegal matter to the proper authorities.

If someone is trying to be provocative and send something naughty, I have some news for you, if that “special” person is not on their mind chances are it’s just lust. If that is your motive then there is little reason to even bother sending some raunchy photo or video to begin with. This all sounds like some overactive 50 Shades fantasy tbh.

To me the word “intimidate” means my partner and I without digital distractions spending our time together. This must be some fantasy being pushed onto the genera public to “spice things up”.
