WhatsApp developers pushed out a new update for the hugely popular messenger platform today that includes a couple of new video and chat features for iOS users.

The main change for users who record video through the app is that they now have the ability to zoom in and out while recording, simply by sliding a finger up and down the screen.

On the interface front, WhatsApp developers have added an Edit option to the chat thread tab to make it easier to archive, delete or mark as read multiple chats in one go.

Elsewhere, individual chat threads are faster to load and can now be scrolled through continuously, rather than users being confronted by requests to 'scroll again' in order to access earlier parts of the same thread.

In addition, singular emojis now show up bigger when sent within a thread (only the heart emoji showed bigger previously).

A new WhatsApp Web/Desktop section has also been added to the Settings screen for users to adjust account login options relating to the new desktop app directly on their iOS device.

WhatsApp Messenger is a free download for iPhone available on the App Store. [Direct Link]

Why doesn't WhatsApp install on my iPod Touch 6? It says my device isn't compatible.

Isn't the whole point of messaging apps that they don't need cellular data/text plans and can use any IP connection? Even stupid Google Voice works on just about anything, even an old Amiga from the 1980's with an old browser.

Your whatsapp account has to be to a phone number. That's why it won't work on the iPod touch.

******** Telegram works on everything even if you use a phone number, and everything is synced.

Exactly! That's why I don't understand how WhatsApp became so popular, when other apps are far more versatile?

Might just be coincidence but I can't log in to whatsapp web on the Mac since the update to the iOS version....

What's the purpose of Whatsapp? I tried it once but it just seemed to be a customisable text messaging/iMessage app, but had a strange Apple-bypassing subscription thing where you may or may not be charged to use it. The first time an ultra popular app has gone over my head. I feel old.

I've never understood why there's no whatsapp for iPad. And don't tell me it's about a phone number

Nice update, but I wish everybody used iMessage :(

Everyone probably would use iMessage if it were available on Android. I understand Apple's decision for keeping the app within its ecosystem (for now at least), but in an instant they could have pretty much owned the messaging market and dealt a serious blow to WhatsApp and FB Messenger in the United States. IMHO platform agnostic software will be more and more important as hardware becomes equally good across manufacturers.

The issue there is getting everyone you might want/need to use that app as well, when in many cases they have already been using WhatsApp for a long long time and have established history and conversations and other contacts there (who are once again similarly already on WhatsApp and might not be willing to go to another app because they already have history and conversations and other contacts on WhatsApp).

I think part of it (aside from customizability) is the more cross-form aspect of it all, which allows for messaging through just data use--many of those things might not be all that unique or interesting these days, but WhatsApp has been around for a while and built up a large following from those earlier days, and still does in various parts of the world where it's more popular (partially because it has been more popular for some time and many people are on it accordingly).

people LOVE the "last seen ..." and group chat feature. i remember my aunt flipping put once cuz her daughter hasnt been on whatsapp in 3 hours, she called everyone in my family and it turned out that my cousin was writing an exam at school and couldnt use her phone obviously lol another time my other aunt left a family group chat. theres this big ass "xy left the group" message when you leave a group chat. my aunts and uncles were all taking about it for days. things like why would she leave? so typical of her!!!

Well, yes, but is that it? I mean why use something different to iMessage if that's all it does?

(I'm not one of those "anti-famous thing" types, I just want to know what it offers over iMessage, or something like Facebook messenger. On paper it seems to offer nothing more but others have told me it's a historic thing. That it was the first app to have big features now shared by others)
