WhatsApp is actively working on an ability for iPhone users to edit messages after they have been sent over the popular Meta-owned encrypted chat platform.

With iOS 16, Apple introduced the ability to edit or unsend recently sent iMessages. Telegram also offers a similar edit-after-sending feature. Now it looks like WhatsApp will be next.

To edit a sent message, users will need to tap and hold on a chat bubble and select the Edit option. According to WaBetaInfo, WhatsApp users can expect to be able to edit a message for up to 15 minutes after sending it, which is the same duration that Apple gives iMessage users wanting to edit sent messages. In contrast, Telegram gives users 48 hours to do their editing.

The ability to edit sent messages will be released in a future update of the app to some WhatsApp beta testers, but as the feature is under development, the public rollout schedule is unknown.

In other Meta-related developments, WhatsApp is also said to be experimenting with private newsletters. WABetaInfo discovered code in a recent beta for Android that includes references to the feature, which is described as a private space in the Status tab that lets users share content with followers.

Last week, WhatsApp began rolling out picture-in-picture support, allowing users to continue their video call in a small window while doing something else on their iPhone.

The only thing I need from Whats App is an iPad App.

I live in a country where you MUST use WA due to everybody using the service. It is annoying when I get back home and I still have to bring my phone everywhere I go even though I am already on my iPad chillin.

Common! Work on something that is actually useful please.

Cue a load of incoming replies from people in the US expressing surprise that anyone uses WhatsApp :D

It's huge outside the USA. This is a nice touch and it'll be handy to go back and edit messages for readability or to correct typos.

This is the one of the apps from Meta that I will not be creating an account for... I already have a Facebook and Instagram account... They already have my data with the two apps and I don't want to add another one... [Even when you delete the account, the data seems to be kept indefinitely although I'm not sure if this also applies to countries that observe GDPR... I know because I deleted an account before and set up a new one and it suggested people that I personally know from my past...]

Although I must say that it's a good thing these cross-platform apps exist for those who do not want to be isolated/be exclusive to either iOS or android...

Ironically, Whatsapp is probably the only meta app that is still somewhat private due to e2ee.

It's probably coming. When installed on Android tablet, Whatsapp now offers an option to login using the same account as the one on the phone. Previously, you have to create a new account on each device. So there is work being done there, albeit slowly.

I’ve had to use this app quite a bit outside the US but I could never figure out why people started using it.

Where is the iPad App for WhatApp? Why is it so hard?
It is hard because seems like Whatsapp was built with the assumption it's being run on one phone device only, and the chats are stores locally. Note that Whatsapp has existed for quite some time, before the iPad even existed. Add on e2ee, it's probably more challenging to shoehorn multiple device support, although seems like it's being worked on. It's different than newer chat apps that are mostly cloud based.

It's as if they're surprised theres a world outside of their borders, LOL. How are they not aware that there's roughly 7.7 billion people outside of USA and the rest of the world DOESNT revolve around them?

Unlike the US, where most carrier plans have unlimited voice and text, most countries are still being charged per min/SMS or have limited quotas on minutes/text. Eg in my country, most plans only cover minutes and text when calling/texting within the same carrier. Calling/texting numbers on other carriers will incur higher/extra charges.

So when Whatsapp was introduced, it provides very cheap and "free" text messaging as all you use is data quota. It also has very low barrier of entry, only requiring a phone number.

I see no other reason but stupidity and laziness.
Whatsapp, when everyone sent SMSs, wanted to be an alternative to that. They even asked for $1 a year for that and miserably failed to make it a profitable business model. That's why it had to be connected 1-to-1 to a phone number, that's why they had no iPad version, that's why the web browser version used to "mirror" your phone and now is independent but still sucks hard.
Guess they were dumb enough not to do it when it was really useful and now it wouldn't be profitable enough to bother.

I’m with you both, I don’t want to have to have my MacBook or my Phone near me when I want to use WhatsApp. Also as @TheYayAreaLiving 🎗 stated previously on a different post a native Apple Watch app would be lovely too

It was like this in my country but WA started offering free communication voice/video/msg outside our data packages. So, now, even if we basically have unlimited sms/voice plans, WA has dominated the market. I don't even open my SMS (imsg) anymore, they just use it for scam and marketing.

Our carriers still don’t offer unlimited voice/SMS , but I agree. SMS have become useless in my country as well, with everyone including the carriers themselves bombarded user with spam.
