Kuo: “In the future, Apple Intelligence’s on-device AI will certainly upgrade (most likely to a 7B LLM), which will require larger DRAM to operate. It is worth watching whether Apple will use this strategy to differentiate between high- and low-end models.”

Will we see a step up to 12GB devices soon? I would not upgrade to iphone 16 pro if it comes with “only” 8GB RAM.

Considering there are already phones that come with 16 GB of RAM (mostly Chinese OEM flagships), I would certainly hope so! 😩

...but realistically, 7B models can be quantized down so they can easily run on 8GB of RAM. It's not ideal since it leads to a loss of precision, but if Apple is determined to continue being ridiculously cheap when it comes to memory, they could certainly do this.

Apple Intelligence Pro? I would count on it. We already have ProRes.

If iPhone 16 Pro series is still 8GB, agree to skip it.

Yup, eventually Apple devices will need 16 GB RAM and 128 GB storage just for the operating system because Apple can’t keep themselves from inflating the code base with things that could easily be optional downloads from the App Store. How much longer until a basic iPhone needs 512 GB just to function? How big is Sonoma compared to Yosemite? Isn’t macOS up to 12 GB now?

In 1995, the standard RAM configuration for a workstation class Mac was 16 Megabytes upgradeable to 128 MB

Someone should massage Tim Apple and tell him to upgrade the RAM to 16GB. How hard can it be?

I’m sure he has someone doing that for him already.

But surely he can see what’s needed to ensure iPhones will run AI properly.
He won’t skim on RAM for something as important as this, right?…um right? 😬

Indeed, I think I will happily miss the 16PM this year and wait to see if the 17PM brings the next RAM upgrade.
The 15P/15PM seems to have been perfectly timed to be able to get Apple Intelligence off the ground but I think 17P/17PM range will be the one to bring it to the next level.

I am interested to see how much differentiation Apple can even manage to bring between 15P/15PM and 16P/16PM at this point given the chipset won’t be that big of a jump, RAM will be the same etc…
I guess the main thing will be the rumoured slightly larger screens and slightly bigger batteries in the 16 Pro range.

Random thought: If the bottleneck is RAM (minimum 8GB needed for AI), then is Apple going to allow version 2 of AI on the 1 & 2 terabyte iPads that already have 16GB of RAM? Or will they exclude them as well with some bull**** excuse since it would look too awkward cutting off some of the M1/M2/M4 iPad Pros but not the others? 🤔
