When are orders delivered?

If I ordered online, would I get it the day of release, or would it just be given to the carrier that day? I have an Apple Store close by, but... wow, it's got to be a madhouse there.

In previous years, orders from Apple would arrive on release day. Someone does generally have to sign in person for the package, though. Not sure how it'll be this year, but I hope it'll be the same.

It will be delivered on the release date if you've pre-ordered it
