When AT&T adds MMS and new rate plans, how will the rate plans work?

Hi everyone,

The title basically explains my question. How will they bill the MMS? Will it make the price of normal SMS go down?

Thanks!

yeah, but say i pay $5.00 a month for 200 text messages. will the MMS messages be included in the 200?

If you have 200 SMS Messages and you happen to send 7 MMS messages, then now you have 193 Messages. There is no extra fee that you have to pay for MMS. The plan is the same. If you have unlimited SMS messaging, send as many pictures and videos of the children to the grandparents.

The only thing we're waiting on is for AT&T to grow up and make MMS available for the iPhone.

No offense to the OP, just making a general statement here.

MMS has been around about as long as camera phones have existed. I have had my share of camera phones over the years and mms/sms have always been bundled together.

Judging by the amount of mms cost questions on these forums, I would conclude that 90% of iPhone owners have never owned a camera phone prior to the iPhone, thus having no clue as to its cost.

Heck judging by some of the threads on here regarding any kind of cost, it seems as most iPhone users have never owned any kind of cell phone prior to the iPhone.

They haven't explicitly stated how they're going to handle the 3G without a messaging plan. Will it be $0.30/msg, no one knows.

ANY sms (messaging) plans will include MMS for free. They aren't differentiating between txt and mms for the iPhone
Read the descriptions they provide for text packages for the iPhone.
AT&T is very specific with the language they are using.
No where does it state anything regarding MMS or (Picture messaging). ;)

Don't be surprised if AT&T comes out with MMS add-on plans for the iPhone.

rjohnstone,

The reason they omit it from current descriptions is because it's not a feature of the iPhone. No point in advertising a feature that doesn't not exist.

The messaging unlimited for families has all the MMS info because it is not an iPhone specific texting plan. It's used for all their phones, most of which can receive MMS.

I hear you, but I wouldn't put it past AT&T to use that as an excuse to charge you more.

After all... this is AT&T we're talking about right? ;)

I'm not going to google it or search here because 1,000s of threads and posts will come out

AT&T already ISSUED A STATEMENT that they will not be charging extra for MMS. It will be included with their TXT plan for the iPhone. Case closed. Thanks for playing.

Try and have your facts straight before you start to condescend. It's not becoming.

Judging from YOUR post - you haven't had a cell phone for a long time - because I know of at least 2 cellular companies that differentiated between txt messages and multimedia bundles which included ringtones, mms, wallpapers and games.

So - they have NOT always been bundled together.

People, It's stated right on AT&T's iPhone site. Go here:

And click on iPhone FAQ in the middle of the page. (or click here:)

Q. Will AT&T offer MMS and tethering?
A. Later this summer, as part of the 3.0 software, AT&T will make multimedia messaging (MMS) available at no extra cost to customers with a text messaging bundle. And, in the future, AT&T will offer tethering capability for iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G.
