When booting from cd, screen goes black

The subject pretty much says it. I'm trying to boot from the cd that came with the MacBook pro and when I do, after about a minute of the apple logo with a swirly line thing under it, the screen goes black. You can hear everything still working though. Eventually the cd stops reading and spins down. I've even let it sit for a while to see if the screen comes back on. I have to hold the power button down to turn the computer off.

it's a MacBook pro 5,5. No boot camp. OS X 10.6.8 I've tried booting from cd by both hitting the option key when loading and by telling it to boot from cd in the cd's menu.

you've tried booting the disc using option or 'c' during boot, if it still fails to boot it might be your media or i'd try using an external optical drive if you can. better yet - make a disc image of your original media on a usb thumb drive or external hard drive and boot/install from that.

If tried both c and option.

How would I put it on a thumb drive?
